Under, In Erebus
An Interactive Fiction by Brian Rapp
Release 1 / Serial number 100930 / Inform 7 build 5Z71 (I6/v6.31 lib 6/12N)
HELP is available.

State/Lake Elevated Station

The platform is so crowded that you fear you'll be pushed forward onto the tracks. You edge backwards slightly to forestall that possibility. Here comes a train now -- is it the Green Line? No, it's... the Black Line to Erebus? But there is no Black Line! And where the heck is Erebus?

> help
Beginners should type INTRO for a brief explanation of interactive fiction and suggested commands. "Under, In Erebus" is officially "polite" because all fatal mistakes are easily remedied with UNDO. For some advice related to the current situation, type HINT (repeatedly if you require more specific clues). You may also unveil the story's SCORING or SECRETS or GOALS if you don't mind being spoiled. As a last resort, a complete WALKTHROUGH is available. Please read the CREDITS for words of thanks from the author and the DISCLAIMER for words of warning. (Capitalized words and phrases are meant to be typed as commands.)

> x train
Apparently you never got the memo about the new Black Line El. Customer service has gotten appallingly bad nowadays.

Black Line El

As the arriving train's doors open, you are forced on board by the inexorable press of bodies. The doors slam shut without so much as a warning chime. You and your fellow passengers are catapulted forward with unusual violence.

The large man in front of you stumbles, knocking you into a metal support pole.

> x man
The large man who just collided with you shows no more interest in acknowledging your existence than any of the other passengers.

Descent Into Darkness

Via an unfamiliar ramp you descend rapidly, past street level and into a completely unlighted tunnel. The angle gets steeper and steeper, until it seems that you must be going almost straight down. As the train itself is without illumination, the darkness accentuates your feelings of vertigo. The temperature also seems to be increasing perceptibly.

Someone elbows you from behind.

> x me
In this total darkness, your appearance is less worrisome than your mental state.

Mind The Gap

The loud rumbling of the wheels abruptly ceases, as if the train has left the tracks entirely. You clutch at the support pole with all your strength, without much concern about its actual supportiveness.

A vociferous retching sound coincides unfortunately well with a sensation of wetness from most of your clothing.

> i
You are carrying:
your defiled clothing (being worn)
your backpack (being worn, and closed)

Hard Landing

After a prolonged moment of ballistic flight, the train crashes thunderously onto a new set of tracks, and miraculously manages to keep going. The descending path abruptly levels out, and the brakes engage with an ear-splitting squeal.

Two or more of your neighbors seem to be competing for the right to stand on top of your feet.

> x neighbors
The chief characteristic of the crowd is its uncomfortable nearness to you.

Last Stop

With a final bone-rattling shudder, the Black Line El comes to a complete stop. The doors automatically whoosh open, and all of the passengers immediately start fleeing. This time you are better prepared, and hold onto your support pole as everyone else pushes past you. Soon you hear a series of screams concluded by a corresponding series of thumps from below, followed by a less-explicable series of small explosions that sound like fireworks.

> x me
In this total darkness, your appearance is less worrisome than your mental state.

> l
Last Stop

The darkness remains profound. There seems to be no one else left. The engines of Black Line El murmur quietly to you at their lowest idling speed.

> out
Slowly and carefully, you step through the doors, and are only slightly surprised to hear them whoosh shut with a tone of finality. By cautiously probing in the dark, you are able to gather a few details about your new environment.

End Of The Line

You stand on a very narrow ledge, from which a sturdy ladder descends.

The tracks extend from this place in the direction that you somewhat arbitrarily choose to remember as "south".

> x tracks
The tracks extend from this place in the direction that you somewhat arbitrarily choose to remember as "south".

> d
Down dozens of rungs you carefully descend in darkness, to the comparative comfort of solid ground.

Long Ladder

The ladder stands on a level plain of solid rock. A strong hot wind blows from the direction you might as well call "north", since that's the way your train was heading before it fell down this rabbit hole. It's about as refreshing as a breeze off a blast furnace, but the wind does aid your navigational sense. You also hear the faint sound of crashing waves.

> s

Heart Of Darkness

If it is possible for something to be blacker than complete darkness, then this is the place. The heat also seems more oppressive here, almost compelling you to lean against a column for support. On the column is a button, which you manage to avoid accidentally pressing. Arranged in a straight line perpendicular to the tracks are six booths. The openings of the first three booths are each protected by a staticky curtain of energy that tickles upon contact. The remaining booths are securely shuttered. A retractable extension cord extends from the fourth booth. At the base of the third booth is a hole through which the cord could fit.

> s

Tiled Terrace

The ground here is covered by a perfectly regular grid of square tiles, separated from each other by thin uncaulked grooves. At the northern edge of the tiles is a featureless cylindrical pillar. Water laps gently against the tiles to the south.

> x pillar
A thick pillar of some hard, smooth substance extends high into the air.

> x water
(the Erebian Sea)
The water gently laps against the southern edge of the tiles.

> w

Carved Coast

The waves here are more than you'd care to attack, but it does sound a bit calmer to the east.

A large diagram engraved in this rocky coast is comprised of a circle within an oval.

You are reminded of your Introduction to Hieroglyphics class, and its discussion of how an arm might evolve into a letter.

> x diagram
It lacks the details usually associated with an Egyptian wedjat, but it could very well be a similar symbol. A long arrow carves out a path pointing roughly southeast.

> s
The rough waves make progress impossible in that direction. From here you can go northwest to an unknown location, north to an unknown location, northeast to Heart Of Darkness, east to Tiled Terrace, and southeast to an unknown location.

> se

Calm Channel

You wade a fair distance into the quiet waters, but they are too deep for you to cross without swimming. Embarrassingly enough, you are unable to swim.

From across the southern sea, you hear someone execrating his rival Acis.

> e

> e

Carved Coast

The waves reaching this shore seem to diminish towards the west.

To you, the rough carving in this rocky shore strongly resembles some sort of animal.

That's the second glyph you've found -- how many might there be?

> x glyph
It has a fat body, a round head, and four stubby legs. Away from this example of primitive art, a carved arrow is aimed in a southwesterly direction.

> ne

Carved Coast

You can hear the roaring sea quite near to you on the east.

The shape of the rock carving here is long and tapered, something like a lens.

That's the third glyph you've found -- surely they must have some significance.

> x glyph
Tucked inside the figure at one end is a single circle, which has been deeply cut, perhaps for emphasis. An arrow carved nearby points to the west.

> e

> w

Pea Plants

The vegetation in this area is comprised of pea plants, which you recognize from your studies. You hear a high-pitched squeak from a nearby plant.

> listen
You hear distant waves crashing.

> x plant
The squeaking sound leads you to locate a pod, which does in fact seem to be squeaking.

> get pod
(the pod)
You pick a pea pod.

> x it
The pod squeaks as if it were trying to say something.

> open it
The pod disintegrates, and you can now clearly hear the single pea insistently calling "Eat me! Eat me!" Consensual cannibalism suggests itself as a possible explanation for this sole survivor of the pod.

> dave
That's not a verb I recognize.

> save
Ok.

> eat pod

The pod disintegrates, and you can now clearly hear the single pea insistently calling "Eat me! Eat me!"

> eat pea
(the pea)
You suddenly burst out of your clothes, completely tearing them to shreds. You are left without even the cutoff shorts traditionally worn by exceptionally muscled heroes. You ache all over, but the pain gradually fades.

Carved Coast

You must step carefully as you walk near the water's edge. Waves crash and roll from northwest to the southeast.

The coastline here has carvings of wavy lines arranged in a tight group, from which a carved arrow points offshore.

You are reminded of your Introduction to Hieroglyphics class, and its discussion of how a sling might evolve into a letter. Or was it a camel? Anyway, the important thing is that it eventually turned into one of our letters.

> x glyph
They're almost an exact copy your favorite Zener card from Introduction to Parapsychology.

Long Ladder

The ladder stands on a level plain of solid rock. A strong hot wind blows from the direction you might as well call "north", since that's the way your train was heading before it fell down this rabbit hole. It's about as refreshing as a breeze off a blast furnace, but the wind does aid your navigational sense. You also hear the faint sound of crashing waves.

> n

Carved Coast

The hot north wind is particularly strong here, and the powerful surf breaks on the shore with great force as well.

Carved into the rocky coastline is a complex semicircular glyph.

That's the fifth glyph you've found -- are they pieces of a puzzle?

> x surf
Rough waves crash on the shore.

> x glyph
Where the curve of the semicircle ends on one side, a small loop is attached. From the other side hangs a square shape connected to the semicircle by a short line. A rough indentation to the south suggests that another carving may have been partially obliterated.

> w
The rough waves make progress impossible in that direction. From here you can go south to Long Ladder, southwest to an unknown location, and southeast to Carved Coast.

> sw

Carved Coast

Water occasionally sprays upon you as you explore the coastline which bends northeast and southwest.

Lines carved into the rocky ground describe a roughly rectangular shape.

You are reminded of your Introduction to Hieroglyphics class, and its discussion of how a house might evolve into a letter.

> x glyph
On further examination the rectangle has several circles connected to one side. Taken as a whole, it might represent a wheeled vehicle of some kind. Nearby is another carving of an arrow, which points inland toward the east.

> sw

Carved Coast

The currents along this western shore seem to be quite swift.

Some unknown agent has managed to engrave another picture into the solid rock.

You are reminded of your Introduction to Hieroglyphics class, and its discussion of how a shepherd's crook might evolve into a letter.

Might these symbols represent the arcane components of a magical spell? If you have any magic-spelling in mind, perhaps they can guide you to your alphabet.

> x glyph
It feels like an oval with smaller circle on one end and a pointy extension on the other. Surmounting the whole are a pair of lobed figures that might be wings. Towards the east from this arrangement points a similarly-carved arrow.

> e

Buzzing Bees

The sound of buzzing fills the air, as many insects fly around you.

> x bees
The bees buzz to and fro in random directions, but seem to remain in this general area.

> s

Carved Coast

The waves here are more than you'd care to attack, but it does sound a bit calmer to the east.

Tiled Terrace

The ground here is covered by a perfectly regular grid of square tiles, separated from each other by thin uncaulked grooves. At the northern edge of the tiles is a featureless cylindrical pillar. Water laps gently against the tiles to the south.

Polyphemus hesitates, then replies, "In exchange for your present survival, Polyphemus sets a challenge before you: return with a suitable drink, or do not return at all!"

Two small fluffy animals approach and rub against you affectionately. They seem to be miniature sheep.

> x sheep
Without so much as an introduction, you ascertain that this is a female sheep. It's comically small, but it's still a sheep.

Polyphemus abruptly interjects: "Polyphemus will give you until the count of three to leave Polyphemus' island. ONE!"

> s
The rough waves make progress impossible in that direction. From here you can go north to Calm Channel.

Polyphemus says, "And don't try to take any of Polyphemus' sheep! Polyphemus can count, you know... Er, did Polyphemus say 'two' yet?"

> z
Time passes slowly in Erebus.

Polyphemus says, "Um, TWO!"

If it is possible for something to be blacker than complete darkness, then this is the place. The heat also seems more oppressive here, almost compelling you to lean against a column for support. The openings of the first three booths are each protected by a staticky curtain of energy that tickles upon contact. The remaining booths are securely shuttered. A retractable extension cord extends from the fourth booth. At the base of the third booth is a hole through which the cord could fit.

Heart Of Darkness

If it is possible for something to be blacker than complete darkness, then this is the place. The heat also seems more oppressive here, almost compelling you to lean against a column for support. On the column is a button, which you manage to avoid accidentally pressing. Arranged in a straight line perpendicular to the tracks are six tiny booths. The openings of the first three booths are each protected by a staticky curtain of energy that tickles upon contact. The remaining booths are securely shuttered. A retractable extension cord extends from the fourth booth. At the base of the third booth is a hole through which the cord could fit.

Each has an opening which is guarded by a sort of staticky curtain of energy. An electrical extension cord extends from the fourth booth to the third, where it has been plugged in.

A tiny pulpit stands apart from the booths.

You also find a tiny ewe, your wristpack (in which are a tiny cup and your tiny textbook), a tiny bear cub, and your ruined miniature clothing here.

Heart Of Darkness

A light shines in the darkness, but the darkness is still doing its darnedest to overcome it. The oppressive heat still surrounds you, and the column still offers rest. Arranged in a straight line perpendicular to the tracks are six tiny booths. Each has an opening which is guarded by a sort of staticky curtain of energy. An electrical extension cord extends from the fourth booth to the third, where it has been plugged in.

A tiny pulpit stands apart from the booths. An extremely faint light emanates from the tiny bulb, barely illuminating the surface of the pulpit.

You also find a tiny bear cub and your ruined miniature clothing here.

After a nearly interminable climb, you finally reach the surface, and blink in the bright sunlight of your familiar city. You're the only person on the street who happens to be buck naked, and you've lost your backpack yet again, but you don't care because you're so happy to be back. If you can now apply yourself with equal industriousness to your post-Erebus career, surely a lucrative publishing deal and/or lawsuit will compensate you for your pains.

Not bad at all — solidly and completely implemented. Good fun working out the principle and getting all the letters. But later, the inventory fiddling spoils a lot of the fun. Even without it, composing words would be a little slow to make experimentation pleasant.

amusing
There are at least 16 ways to perish in Erebus, including a terminal fall, an interminable fall, being squashed, diminished into nothingness, hit by a train, mobbed by a crowd, slain by an invisible stalker, stabbed by a cyclops, incinerated, poisoned, envenomed, electrocuted, drowned, shot with high-explosive rounds, tossed off the edge of the world, and doomed by fear itself. More bonus points also remain to be found, some of which might happen to amuse.
